The Marrying Kind $16.96 Daringly mixing comedy and drama in a rare example of American neorealism, George Cukor created a picture that portrayed the difficult, frayed life of a working-class couple and the breakup of their blue-collar marriage, a topic that rarely made its way to the screen. Cukor’s regular collaborators Ruth Gordon and Garson Kanin provided him a script filled with fine dialogue and strong dramatic moments, and Judy Holliday, fresh from her Oscar-winning success in Cukor’s BORN YESTERDAY, reunites with the director to play the lead role. As Florence Keefer, Holliday portrays a woman bent on divorcing her husband Chet (Aldo Ray), who will have to give up her unrealistic expectations in life in order to find true happiness. The film chronicles their misfortunes and good times, and the relationship as it unravels. THE MARRYING KIND was written specifically for Judy Holliday, then at the peak of her career. |

Poor Miss Finch: A Domestic Story $46.69 1908. A close friend of Charles Dickens, Collins is one of the most readable of the Victorian novelists and some critics credit him with the invention of Sensation/Detective novels. Lucilla Finch, who has been blind since early childhood, falls in love with Oscar Dubourg. After a head injury, Oscar develops epilepsy, and then turns blue from the treatment. Lucilla harbors an irrational hatred of dark colors, including dark skin; so, Oscar devises to hide his blueness from Lucilla until after their marriage. When his twin brother visits, Oscar tells Lucilla that Nugent is the blue man, a deception that backfires when Nugent-who has fallen in love with Lucilla himself-brings in Herr Grosse, an oculist who cures Lucilla’s blindness. Her first vision is of Nugent, who sabotages Oscar by assuming his identity and making it impossible for Oscar to reveal the truth. Oscar goes abroad, becoming a nurse, but returns in time to rescue Lucilla-who is blind again-from marrying Nugent. After the brothers reconcile, Lucilla and Oscar marry and have two children; Nugent freezes to death during an Arctic expedition. Quality of Life in Ireland: Social Impact of Economic Boom $97.8 The Irish economic boom has caused the economy in Ireland to roar ahead, but what has it done to Irish society? Some see the rising tide as having lifted all boats, while others argue that the benefits have accrued mostly to those who were already well placed. Some highlight how economic growth has raised living standards, while others say that it has imposed strains on family life, eroded values and communities, and created problems in accessing adequate housing, health care and other services. So, are we in Ireland now living in ‘the best of times’, or has increased prosperity come at (too high) a cost? And can the rest of the world draw any lessons from what has happened in Ireland? The purpose of this book, which contains a collection of chapters written by some of Ireland’s leading social researchers, is to bring to bear the latest research and empirical evidence to answer these questions. It is aimed at a general audience and seeks to contribute to public debate in Ireland and abroad, while at the same time striving for rigorous, evidence-based argument. The overall judgment offered by the book is positive, though with qualifications. Ireland still has problems: social inequalities are slow to narrow; the indignities of poverty and hopelessness, though less widespread than before, are still too common; some public services are poor; and traffic congestion frays the nerves. But there is a long list of social fundamentals that are stronger today than before the economic boom arrived.National moral is among the highest in Europe, most people’s economic circumstances have greatly improved, jobs are astonishingly abundant, people are now flocking into the country rather than out of it, and they are marrying and having children at a higher rate than fifteen years ago. These are only some of the positives identified in the book. Together they suggest that even on social grounds the Irish economic boom deserves at least two |
